Progressive Enterprises Auckland National Distribution Centre

"Thank you for your persistence and perseverance in playing such an important part in delivering this project. Pulling something apart and putting it back together is never easy! We have seen the old building being transformed and we now have a modern facility that will serve PEL now and well into the future." Ian Giblett, Woolworths National Construction Manager – Australia
Progressive Enterprises Auckland National Distribution Centre

Beca was engaged in 2009 to provide multi-disciplinary services to upgrade Progressive's fourth and largest Ambient distribution centre in their logistics network.

Progressive Enterprises' previous Auckland Distribution Centre was outgrowing its current facilities and to keep in line with its national logistics strategy it identified a need to move slow moving products for nationwide distribution into a separate facility. Located in South Auckland, the revamped Auckland National Distribution Centre fulfils this purpose while paving the way for future expansion on the remainder of the site.

Beca provided project management, architecture, structural engineering, civil engineering and building services.

The rebuild altered the structure and operation of the distribution centre, which largely caters for slow moving products destined for supermarkets nationwide. The facility will house 8000 different stock-keeping units (SKUs), with around 5000 pallets moving in and out every week.

Some key design elements of the project include:

  • an enlarged site entrance
  • a new truck route alignment (a two-way, dual lane carriageway)
  • 1200 tonnes of modern storage racking (15m high)
  • the largest free standing canopy span in the country (60m span)

The NZ$20 million refurbishment was delivered on time and within budget with practical completion achieved officially on 28 March 2011.
