The extension involved linking the Air New Zealand and Qantas terminals into one large facility, sharing an enhanced retail precinct and a new food court area. A new security screening area for departing passengers was also built, with room set aside for future expansion.
Beca was engaged as lead consultant on the project and provided:
- project and cost management services
- geotechnical and civil engineering services
- building services including mechanical, electrical, fire, security and communications and controls.
In addition, the team offered specialist retail tenant fitout management and co-ordination services using the AIAL Retail Alterations Manual as a basis for conducting these services.
A construction window of seven months and the need to keep both terminals operational was a challenge for the new retail link building. Another was working within a site bordered by several other projects also under construction, including the Qantas Terminal forecourt upgrade, Air New Zealand Domestic Terminal redevelopment and a new multi-storey car park.
To meet the requirments of completing the project within the tight timeframes, Beca initiated a negotiated contract process in tandem with a multi-staged consent process. This enabled the construction to commence while still completing some elements of the design.
