“Beca thrives on the collective effort of a large number of very capable and hard working people who define a culture of quality and performance.”
As a senior geotechnical engineer and Associate at Beca, Nathan enjoys leading challenging projects and working as part of a team which strives to deliver high quality solutions to clients.
Nathan joined Beca as a geotechnical engineer after graduating from Auckland University in 2001 with a PhD in Civil engineering. The environment of support and trust at Beca enabled him to work on many interesting and diverse projects, with several opportunities along the way to develop his career by applying his newfound skills and knowledge.
Nathan has been involved in large infrastructure projects such as bridges, roads and retaining walls, with varied and often difficult terrains. His key interest is in the geotechnical aspects of seismic design and soil structure interaction.
Nathan’s recent work includes a number of high level studies to support consent applications and provide strategic advice across New Zealand and further afield. He was the lead geotechnical engineer for the Waikato wind farm, Papamoa reservoirs, Oropi reservoirs, Kennedy road reservoirs, Northcote underpass, Awhitu wind farm, Northern Busway and Mangatawhiri deviation.
“My most memorable experience at Beca was standing at the crest of a huge slip within a slag dump at a mining site in Indonesia” he says. His role was to assess the cause of the slip and to provide a design that would allow dumping and quarrying to resume safely, and that would suit the mine operations.
“I think good client relationships are similar to good friendships,” he says. “The best client relationships are about trust, sharing and companionship as you share long days working on site.”
