“Using GIS you can view, interpret and visualise data to reveal relationships and trends – all valuable in identifying the best solutions for projects.”

Orlando Kootstra - GIS Project Manager.

As a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Project Manager, Orlando’s role involves developing GIS methodology and strategy, implementing GIS systems and delivering GIS solutions on projects of all scales.

With over 10 years’ experience working in the GIS and Information Technology (IT) industries, Orlando has worked in a variety of markets in New Zealand and the UK, including forestry, local government and infrastructure.

Before joining Beca in early 2009, Orlando’s valuable UK experience included working on a 500MW offshore wind farm construction project in the North Sea. As a GIS engineer, Orlando was responsible for the development and implementation of a GIS database, coordinating data capture (GIS and Geotechnical), bathymetric data, terrain modelling and thematic mapping. Before that, he spent four years with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets as a corporate GIS coordinator, integrating web mapping and GIS systems with other organisation applications.

Orlando’s recent Beca work includes being responsible for GIS in the Auckland CBD Rail Link Study, helping to support route selection using spatial analysis and mapping. He also coordinated the GIS input and web mapping elements for the Hunua No 4 water supply development for the Auckland Motorway Alliance. Working closely with Beca’s Water team, Orlando is currently developing a GIS system and providing strategy support regarding implementation of the GIS system in a manner which supports the client’s needs.

“Beca is an ideal place to work because I have a huge pool of resources at hand”, he says. “The diversity of projects, skills and people at Beca gives you a broad knowledge of engineering and the environment.”
