Ian Booth, Technical Director of Building Services Engineering / Auckland

Since 2007, Ian has led Beca’s Laboratories Design Group in the Auckland office. He joined Beca from the UK with a remit to share his specific laboratory and clean room knowledge and experience with the team of hospital engineers – an initiative from which Ian is proud to say Beca is "reaping the benefits with high quality results."

In the UK, Ian worked as lead designer on several major projects for some of the world's leading pharmaceutical organisations such as Pfizer, Novartis and Invent Pharma as well as for Manchester and Sheffield Universities. One of his first tasks on joining Beca was to familiarise himself with the Australian and New Zealand Standards in general, and laboratory design in particular, benchmarking these against international guidelines.

Ian's New Zealand project experience includes the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. Beca was engaged to firstly masterplan, and then carry out, the detail design for this $240 million, Sector 500 Campus. As Project Director Ian managed and gave technical direction to a multidisciplinary team of over 50 engineers encompassing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, laboratory gases, environmental, power and fire engineering disciplines.

Ian has nothing but praise for his Beca colleagues, finding the company ethos and working with like-minded engineers with common goals and aspirations very enjoyable. "It is very reassuring to find that, when I delve into in the Beca machine, I find an experienced champion in virtually all fields of engineering – and they are always striving to improve".
