Beca has received a Minister of Defence Award of Excellence Award to Industry, taking out the projects under $7 million category, in recognition of work by Beca Applied Technologies on the Royal New Zealand Air Force Radar Trainer Project.

The award was presented by the New Zealand Secretary of Defence, John McKinnon, to Dr Thomas Hyde, general manager of Beca Applied Technologies, at the annual awards dinner held in association with the NZDIA Defence Industry Forum.

“The technical challenges on this project were significant and I am delighted that the Radar Trainer Project team has received this accolade in recognition of their work,” said Dr Hyde.

The Minister of Defence Awards were established in 1998 by the Defence Industry Committee of New Zealand (DICNZ) to highlight and reward the contribution made by industry to Defence.

The radar trainer is designed to prepare RNZAF radar operator students to operate the radar fitted to the P-3K2 Orion aircraft. The project involved over 1200 software requirements, and required continual innovation and communication throughout its duration.
