Beca entered the China market in 1998 in Suzhou, expanded into Beijing in 2003 and moved our Suzhou office to Shanghai in 2008. Our business in China is a mix of Buildings (Electrical and Mechanical), Project Management, Civil and Industrial.
Our Shanghai office, which now employs 37 people, is the main office for the Industrial and Project Management sections in China, and also has a Buildings team.
The Shanghai team offers selected services including design management, project management and construction management for multi-national clients who want a Western standard of delivery with an understanding of the local environment. Our projects include commercial and residential developments, hotels, shopping malls, warehouses and manufacturing facilities.

- the Chonqing Ruqi Building - a commercial development comprising an office building and shopping centre
- NZ World Expo Pavilion, Shanghai 2010 - design of the MEP and structural services
- Cixi Crowne Plaza - full design of the building services for a new hotel development for Crowne Plaza hotel group
- Ascendas Science Park, Hangzhou - project management and design of the MEP services for an extensive science and technology park
- Xian Future City - full design of the building services for a shopping mall and residential development in the west of China
- Swire Cold Store, Guangzhou - project management of a cold store facility in the south of China
- General Mills Shanghai Dumpling Factory - design and management for the extension of an existing dumpling factory
- Quingdao Fortune Centre - 65 storey, mixed use tower
- Project Olympic Quingdao - retail complex
- Gelita Cangnan, Pingyang, Liaoyuan – project management of bed driers, waste water treatment plants, brine systems
- Genesis Ningbo – project management of zinc furnace, baghouse, diesel system
- Fonterra Tangshan – construction management of 3000 cow dairy farm
- Inco Dalian – project management of all Inco projects within China, Japan and Korea.
As a member of the Shanghai team, you will be a part of a busy and friendly team. Social events are a part of the office culture, and organised trips and an annual staff party help you get to know your colleagues outside the work environment.
Many of the Shanghai team members take advantage of opportunities to work in a variety of locations. Around 20% of our team are almost permanently working on project sites in different locations of China, and one third of them are working between office and various project sites!

Shanghai is a city of stunning contrasts - the largest economic and trade centre, a comprehensive industrial base and the leading port in China. European-style cityscapes and tree-lined neighbourhoods rub shoulders with the sci-fi skyline of Pǔdōng.
Cultural museums and impressive art galleries are in good supply around the city, and many appealing cities and towns lie close to Shanghai and have become notable tourist destinations in their own right. Popular excursions include the cities of Shaoxing and Suzhou, the Blue Lake and the beautiful Hangzhou Bay.
Enjoy shopping in the massive malls, commercial streets and shopping areas, or sample food from all over China and the world at over a thousand restaurants. Stroll beside the river, through the traditional Chinese planting in the Botanical Garden, or in the Yu Gardens - more than 400 years old and featuring a neighbouring shopping bazaar.
