A particular highlight in my career was acquiring seven new ships for the Navy as one of the lead engineers.
Before joining Beca in 2007, Bruce worked for 20 years in the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) as a combat systems engineer. He gained valuable experience in systems engineering, project management, engineering management, business improvement, military combat, communication systems and marine electronics.
Working for Beca Applied Technologies (BAT) as Senior Systems Engineer and Technical Director, Bruce is responsible for a range of complex systems projects, primarily in the defence market.
One of these was the Marine Engineering Simulator project for the RNZN. Bruce was the systems engineer and project manager for the entire lifecycle of the project, including producing the business case and securing acquisition funding through to installation and commissioning.
Bruce was also project manager on the development of a Radar Training Simulator that will be used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force to train operators on modern, sophisticated airborne surveillance radar.
As project manager for the New Zealand Army Land Transport Capability Programme, Bruce delivered of a range of system engineering services to help the NZ Army improve their land transport capability. His role included the development of operational concepts, user and system requirements analysis.
Bruce also has experience on non-defence projects, having worked as project manager and systems engineer on the upgrade to the Baggage Handling System at the International Terminal building in Auckland Airport.
Bruce feels that Beca’s multi-disciplinary organisational culture fully embraces personal development, providing opportunities to work on a variety of interesting and challenging projects. “It is very satisfying to work for an employee-owned business where I can be assured that my individual contributions can help with Beca's wider success,” he says.
