“The sheer amount of knowledge readily at hand reflects the emphasis Beca places on learning and development.”
With a career that spans Beca’s principal hubs in New Zealand, Australia and Asia, Clive has acquired extensive experience through a broad project base in a variety of locations.
Initially involved in technical and Project Management roles, Clive switched to a more strategic focus when he assumed the General Manager role for Beca operations in China in 2006. He returned to New Zealand in 2008 to manage Auckland’s Infrastructure Management Services division.
Having spent much of his career overseas, Clive particularly enjoyed his time in China. A major project milestone for him occurred during a time of unprecedented economic growth in the 1990s. Clive was Design Manager for the Suzhou Brewery development, which proved challenging at a technical and personal level. “While living in a hotel room for six months was a huge challenge in itself, there was also the stress of working on a large-scale project that was Beca’s first Greenfield involvement in the region,” he says.
Other significant projects include the seismic retrofit design for Wellington’s Thorndon Overbridge upgrade and the fast-tracked Macau Tower and Entertainment Centre; for which Clive was Structural Lead.
Clive is a fitting example for young engineers to follow, demonstrating the extent to which an open and flexible outlook can influence one’s opportunities for career development. “The variety of potential roles in engineering remains unknown and unimaginable until you make yourself available and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves” he says.
