“We never rest on our laurels at Beca. Instead, we constantly reflect on lessons learned to strive for innovative and efficient solutions that achieve good planning and design outcomes.”

Bryce Julyan - Practice Development Director of Planning.

As Practice Development Director for Beca Planning Bryce is involved in the strategic and technical direction of Beca Planning which comprises around 70 planning and urban design staff, spread across offices throughout Australasia, who provide planning, resource management and urban design advice to public and private sector clients.

His career began with the Ministry of Works and Development, where he gained a solid grounding in infrastructure planning and asset management for government departments and networks such as energy, emergency services, roads and rail. Having worked in both development and strategic policy planning in the UK and NZ, since joining Beca in 1996, Bryce’s main focus has been on developing strategies for major consents with a particular emphasis on lineal networks and transport infrastructure (including state highways). A particular passion has been to develop the field of integrated transport and land use planning and has contributed to building Beca’s rail business, particularly working on the Auckland regional transport network. “Working with Auckland regional rail authorities we developed integrated land-use and transport plans for station precincts, as well as new rail services and connections,” he explains.

In addition, Bryce’s strategic outlook has assisted Beca’s growing urban design business. The urban design team has grown from strength to strength, delivering major inputs on important projects such as NZ Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection and Victoria Park Tunnel projects in Auckland.

Bryce appreciates the multiple tangible outcomes that Beca delivers on projects. “Not only to we aim to ensure that our projects meet the client’s requirements but we also target good quality outcomes - particularly for infrastructure and urban planning projects that offer major visible enhancements to the urban streetscape,” he says. Another valued outcome is staff development. Bryce is particularly supportive of optimising the ability for staff to develop their skills and talents on a wide range of challenging projects and firmly believes in mentoring others to foster a collaborative and professionally-driven culture within Beca Planning.

Bryce recognises the people as the organisation’s core competency, underpinning not only Beca Planning but across the whole business. “Experienced and capable people are attracted to a collegial work environment with like-minded and well-respected people.”
