Group Director of Professional Excellence and Group Health & Safety Manager / Auckland

David Carter

“My aim is to help drive towards a bigger, stronger and more vibrant Beca that younger people will aspire to own.”

David Carter - Executive Director.

David is currently Group Director of Professional Excellence and Group Health & Safety Manager and an Executive Director of Beca Group Ltd. David leads Beca’s drive for improved health and safety practice from the front. He also directs Beca’s focus on professional excellence and systematic development of greater technical capability and the enhancement of technical career paths. David sits on a number of boards including Beca Group Ltd, Beca AMEC and is chair of Beca Infrastructure Ltd.

After completing his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering, David joined Beca in the geotechnical section and airport sectors before moving into design management, which became a significant turning point in his career. This transition into a broader, multidisciplinary environment served to reinforce the importance of team work and relationship building, both within and across companies, in the delivery of successful projects.

As one of the larger players in the consultancy industry, Beca works closely with a number of diverse, interesting clients; and David remains passionate about maintaining strong relationships with them. Projects for which David has led the design include the redevelopment of Auckland’s waterfront for the 2000 America’s Cup, the Mangere Waste Water Treatment Plant upgrade and, more recently, the Melbourne Airport Runway widening.

David’s greatest career satisfaction has been derived from fostering future leaders within Beca and supporting many new starters by providing them with both local and overseas opportunities to further their long term career within Beca. “Beca has recently more than doubled its training budget and appointed a specialist organisational development manager to assist in training and developing future leaders”.
